Across the UK, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is shaping the way we approach land purchase and development. With the Environment Act 2021 now enacted through the Biodiversity Regulations 2024, it’s more important than ever that we understand the potential a plot of land holds - not only for its existing habitats but also for future ones.
While soil quality is a huge factor in determining BNG potential, developers are often forced to engage with ecologists and geo-environmental consultants separately, with very few practices offering a combined service.

That’s why we’re delighted to announce our collaboration with geo-environmental firm, Roberts Environmental. Through this exciting partnership, we are offering our clients a quality, streamlined approach to BNG.
The service
Legislation dictates that developers must commission a baseline BNG assessment, quantifying the number of biodiversity units on a pre-development site. This number is then used to inform a land-purchase decision or determine a mandatory post-development figure; the number of units the completed site must contain to comply with new regulations.
To satisfy planning conditions, the means of achieving these required gains must be established before development can begin. However, to understand which BNG units a site could support, its soil quality must first be measured…
This is achieved through a Soil Resource Survey, a soil-grading service offered by very few UK consultancies.
